The magazine Sàpiens uncovers the network of collaborators that the Third Reich had in Catalonia during the Second World War. The journalist Jordi Finestres, working with the advice of historian Josep Maria Solé i Sabater, gained access to documents classified as secret in the Washingto n national archives. The files reveal the names and surnames of more than 500 agents who, according the United States secret service, participated in Adolf Hitler’s network in Catalonia.
German citizens appear on this long list, but so do Catalans and Spaniards residing in places like Figueres, Portbou, la Jonquera, Sant Carles de la Ràpita and, especially, Barcelona. Indeed, on a map of Barcelona at that time, Sàpiens shows exactly where the Nazi agents lived in the Catalan capital.
Also in this issue, the magazine includes a report with examples of the documents found in the United States national archives related to the network of Nazi agents in Catalonia in the early post-war period. One of the most interesting of these documents is an organogram created by the United States secret service describing the relationships between Franco’s secret service and that of Germany.
