"Diumenge a les 5" is a documentary about the role of political prisoners in the peace process in Northern Ireland. Two of these prisoners, one from the IRA and the other a UDA loyalist, present an in-depth and unprecedented portrait of the prison perspective of conflict resolution. Through their eyes we are taken back to the past and brought up to the present, to the awakening of their political consciousness, to their lives in hiding, through the struggle of prison, torture, hunger strikes… but also to places won through reflection and the drive for peace from behind bars, the freedom brought by the Peace Agreement, relationships with victims and perspectives on the future.
Walls that separate communities, Stormont Parliament, Long Kesh/Maze high-security prison, cemeteries, but also a recovered family life are some of the scenes we journey through with the two protagonists, Séanna Walsh, ex-member of the IRA and Billy McQuistan, ex-member of the loyalist paramilitary group UDA. As a result of their armed activities they have spent a good part of their lives in prison and from that space they have also played a very important role in the impetus behind the Good Friday Agreement and the current keeping of the peace. The Batabat team followed Séanna and Billy through their current lives, public and private, and listened to their reflections on the past and present from the awakening of their political consciousness to their lives in hiding, through the struggle of prison, torture, hunger strikes –but also to places won through reflection and the drive for peace from behind bars, as well as the peaceful struggle on the front lines to keep today the peace that has come at such a price.
"Diumenge a les 5" is a documentary produced by TV3 and Euskal Telebista with the collaboration of the Northern Irish production company Tobar Productions.
